Submission
Protocol
The submissions are arguably the most fundamental part of the library and archive. Opening the aggregation of material to the public sphere expands the representation of the archive beyond available institutional resources and draws on the collective knowledge of the commons. Each submission requests for the details of the artist, collective, project or exhibition they are submitting, why the submission is important to include in the archive/library, and checklist asking:
Are the individuals submitted to the archive women or non-binary identifying?
Have they or do they currently live in Milwaukee, WI? What years?
Have they exhibited or organized art in Milwaukee, WI?
Which neighbourhoods did they live in?
Forms and processes slightly vary between digital and physical submissions. Donations of physical archival materials must be flat or 2D (press clippings, scanned copies, original copies, essays, written letters and notes, photographs and 2D documentation of artworks or exhibitions, ect.) and preferably copies (not originals). Donated books or tapes may relate to women, the condition of women, women’s histories, queer culture, feminism, art theory, gender theory, archival theory, affect theory, identity politics, ect.
If you or someone you know has materials that (such as those listed above) and would like to donate them to the Milwaukee Women’s Art Library. You can download a pdf of our donation form here. All materials can be dropped off at the Charles Allis Art Museum or arranged for pick up. Please email Ashley Janke at jankeashley@gmail.com with any further questions.
